7 common AC problems Chicago homeowners should watch for

Chicago summers are hot and humid, so a weak AC shows up fast. These are the seven problems technicians see most.
1. A dirty air filter
Restricted airflow reduces cooling and can freeze the coil. Check the filter monthly during summer.
2. Refrigerant leaks
Low charge means weak cooling, ice on the lines and higher bills. The leak has to be found and repaired.
3. A frozen evaporator coil
Ice usually points to low airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the AC off, run the fan to thaw it, then have the cause fixed.
4. A failed capacitor
A weak capacitor keeps the compressor or fan motor from starting. You may hear humming from the outdoor unit.
5. A clogged condensate drain
Algae and sludge block the drain line. Water leaks near the indoor unit, or a safety switch shuts the system down.
6. A dirty or blocked condenser coil
Dirt and cottonwood stop the outdoor unit from shedding heat, which raises pressures and strains the compressor.
7. Thermostat and electrical faults
Worn contactors, loose connections and tripped breakers can all stop the system. These repairs belong to a licensed technician.
