Repair or replace your furnace or AC? How to decide

Nobody wants to replace a system early, but pouring money into a failing one isn't smart either. Weigh these factors.
Age
- Furnaces: 15 to 20 years is typical.
- Central AC: 12 to 15 years.
- Boilers: often 20 years or more, longer for cast iron.
Cost of the repair
A common rule of thumb multiplies the system's age by the repair cost. If the result is above roughly $5,000, replacement deserves a hard look. It is only a guide.
Big red flags
- A cracked heat exchanger is a safety problem, and replacement is usually the answer.
- A failed compressor on an older AC often costs close to a new system.
- Systems that use R-22 refrigerant are costly to repair, because production ended in 2020.
- Repeated repairs in one season.
Efficiency and comfort
Older furnaces may run at 80 percent efficiency, and new high-efficiency models reach 95 percent or more. Uneven rooms and rising bills also point toward replacement.
Get numbers, not pressure
